Walking Book

Walking Book is about self image and identity through walking. The project started as to find new method to show identity other than what they have and what are they look like. Inspired by one scene from Mission Impossible, I found out that every individuals has unique walking and it is impossible to copy as it is the reflection of thousands of experience and unique body shape.

Initially it was investigated through recording several people’s walking and turned it into simple animation. Each line was made out of tracking ankles, hip and head. As it didn’t contain deeper information about the person and the experiment was still too similar as gait analysis, I changed medium to a book. For more information, I interviewed each person about walking and asked them to walk on paper with tempera ink on their foot. The first book was 45 inch width and 17inch height book with spiral binding which suppose to live on the floor. Readers should walk while they are reading the book.

Final Walking Book is bound in accordion binding. Since walking is continuous movement, separate sheets like spiral binding didn’t work for the concept. With accordion binding, layout for the interview can still maintain the same pace of the walking and footsteps.
